Now that the tickets are bought, the bills are paid and the
bags are packed, I am still in disbelief that I am actually here. I am at the
airport, through security, and awaiting my departure from the Newark Airport.
It has been a long journey to get here but I am so grateful to all the people
(SEBS, Garden Club of America, and my family) for helping to push me out of my
comfort zone. I am so exited to spend the next five weeks learning about my
field, my heritage, and myself from an entirely new perspective. I have goals,
of course, but I am sure they will change along the journey.
My dad gave me some advice before my departure, he said, "...be flexible". As a frequent traveler he told me about his many stores of missing trains to miss planes. It all sounded so miserable, but he said to just be patient and "be flexible". Although, I hope nothing like that happens among my travels, I will take his words of wisdom with me!
Some things I want to get out of this trip are:
- To learn a lot about landscape architecture
- To learn a lot about myself and “be flexible” to changes and unscheduled events
- To learn German
- To keep an open mind
- To eat lots of authentic German food.
