Today was our first excursion. We explored the Macconais region we have been learning so much about. We first visited Mdm. Bordon’s goat farm. She explained to us her daily routine of getting up at 3am to milk her goats and proceed to make the cheese. We tasted her freshest 48 hour cheese and her oldest ( a couple month old cheese). We also observed some old farm tools used in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Afterwards we went to an agricultural and winery college where students were trained in these fields. We observed their method of goat cheese and wine production. We tasted their St. Veran wines and goat cheeses. Lunch was a picnic at Roche de Solutre. The view of the grape fields was beautiful and the history of the land was very interesting as well. Many horse bones are still found in the valley from ancient hunters. After lunch we visited Domaine Perraud’s winery. This winery is owned by Sonya and her husband. They use organic methods to grow and maintain their grape plants. I enjoyed tasting the red winesdueto their complicated aromas and tastes.
