This morning was pretty peaceful. We had a lecture on the ecology and geographical history of Africa, then had a break before we continued on to another lecture about trapping and surveying (a small part of what we will be doing to contribute to scientific data). Then, the most wild thing happened.. the electric fence surrounding the camp started wobbling and bending back and forth vigorously, as if something had knocked in to it.. and indeed, something had! A giraffe had ran and tripped over the fence line into camp! forget about bears wandering into a campsite in the US, giraffes and monkeys wander around camp in Africa! Luckily the staff corralled it out safely and no one was harmed. The staffs' guess was that a predator was chasing it, because there is no other reason a giraffe would try to get into camp so forcefully. Apparently it's a common occurance for baboons and bush buck to hop the fence as well.
