Reflections: Free Clinic

Saturdays had to be my favorite day. I couldn't believe how incredibly involved the Doc was in the community, and on top of that, it was even more mind-blowing how involved we were in the clinic. Saturday mornings meant packing up in the van with the entire class and driving over to the town center. The Doc worked for the government and would be supported to host a free clinic at the town center every weekend. The clinic was literally a few plastic tables set up on a raised cement platform. The Doc would promote the event a week in advance via word of mouth. We set up the station, reviewed dosage amounts and procedures with the doc and formed up on the platform. This was the best part- the doc went to his car, pulled out a lawn chair and sat down with an iced tea. We literally ran the show. We checked each client in, performed a physical on every dog, and administered ivermectin, vitamin B and dewormer when need be. We treated 76 patients. I never learned so much through experience in such a short time. As far as veterinary experience goes, this experience was the most valuable.
