Today after class we took an excursion to the countryside.
It is a region called Friesland, which is a very different part of the
Netherlands. They have a very unique culture incorporating a different language
besides Dutch. It was nice to get out of the city for a few hours and
experience something new. We went to a dairy farm and took a tour given by the
farmer. I really liked this excursion because the farmer cared so much about
his animals and the vision his farm portrayed to the community. It was very important
to him that the animals had free range of the farm. Also, the technology they
used for milking was very neat. It is designed to recognize each cow and controls
the important aspects such as milking, feeding, and medicines, which are tailored
to the needs of each individual cow. I’ve never seen anything like this before,
but I was really impressed considering I have frequently heard the horror
stories of factory farming in the US. As an animal lover, I definitely
appreciated learning about this type of farm and the care taken by the
management.
